The Widow Mite Challenge!

Are we able to give to the Lord our all?

Money is so important for our lives today, it seems strange that a poor person, a widow, would give so much money in the collection as the one mentioned in our Gospel Portion today (St. Mark 12:38-44). The widow has come down to us in history because of what she did about two thousand years ago. We read,

And He sat down opposite the treasury and watched the multitude putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came, and put in two copper coins, which make a penny. And He called His disciples to Him, and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put more than all those who contributing to the treasury. For they all contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, her whole living.” Mark 12: 41-44

The Widow is a challenge for us because she gives her all to God. It is much more than the amount she is giving; she is giving herself. This donation of hers is a sign that she has trust in God and that God will provide.

Are we ready to do the same? Here I am not saying to sell everything and give ourselves to God. But I am saying it is time to reflect on our relationship to God to make sure God comes first and let everything else flow from this relationship!
