As we celebrate the 3rd Sunday of Lent, we find Our Lord Jesus cleansing the Temple of Jerusalem. ( John 2:13:25) The market place has become part of the Holy Place; there is no room for both. The Market Place replaced the Divine One. The Temple cannot be a House of Prayer for all People and be cheating innocent worshipers.

Jesus is the true Temple! For those who follow Him, us, we become temples too!

In this time of Lent, Jesus will shake us up too! Jesus will remove from us the Market Place that we have let into ourselves. He is able and will do the cleansing if we give our whole self to Him!

On this Second Sunday of Lent we meditate on the Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Gospel of St. Mark.

We join the three future leaders of the Followers of Jesus: Peter, the first Pope; James, the Head of the Church of Jerusalem, who was died as a martyrs; John, the Beloved Disciple, the author of St. John’s Gospel, Revelation and the Epistles that carry his name. And we experience the Law and the Prophets meet together in Jesus. We know that all aspects of our lives are brought together in Jesus and we hear the Father:

This is my beloved Son, listen to Him! Mark 9:7

We need Transfiguration Moments! May this Sunday and every Sunday be Transfiguration Moments for us so that during the week we can hold on to hope!

The Spirit immediately drove Jesus into the desert. Mark 1:12

We begin the First Sunday of Lent by following Jesus in the desert. We walk with Jesus, fasting with Him and preparing ourselves to be more like Him. Jesus is the way in which we become Jesus in the World.

Tremendous evil is ever present. The evil one is ever tempting us to leave the Jesus’ approach to life. But our Rabbi, the Lord Jesus gives us the way of victory over evil; Jesus is the way!

The Kingdom of God is present when Jesus lives in us!

And He came and took her by hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her; she got up and served them. Mark 1:31

The healing of the Mother-In-Law of Peter reminds us of a key part of our lives with Jesus. First, she was sick with a fever. Second, her Son-In-Law, his brother and his friends brought Jesus to her. Third, Jesus heals her and finally she gets to work doing what God wanted her to do: hospitality!

We are called to be ministers of healing and ministers of hospitality among many other obligations of our relationship with Jesus.

We can and must bring Jesus to people! Jesus is still in the healing business! And once we are physically able, we are called to serve one another.

We are part of a community of healing and service! In Jesus we change the world!

Jesus still heals!

We are a world that is hurting. The Pandemic of 2020 has left a terrible mark on our people. There is so much death, there is so much poverty and hunger, there is so much despair, yet Jesus speaks to us through our hurts and pain.

In the Gospel reading for today, Mark 1:21-28, St. Mark only records for us a brief statement of Jesus for us to meditate on.

“Be silent and come out of him!” Mark 1:25

In this early part of Jesus’ Ministry, the hearers in the Synagogue were impressed by His words but the demon knew Him and knew His purpose.

“I know who you are, the Holy One of God” Mark 1:24

It might seem strange but let us use these words of the demon and call on Jesus more earnestly now than ever. He will cast out any demon that we are struggling with. Jesus will bring order in our chaotic time. Total Trust in the Lord!

Happy Word of God Sunday!

Jesus is the Word of God and to follow Him, we must first know Him! To do this, the first thing we must do is read and live the Bible.

Today we read about the calling of the Brothers to stop what they are doing, they are fishermen, to fish for people so that they may have an encounter with Jesus (Mark 1:14-20). If we compare these early days of their ministry, and the end of their ministry, it may seem that they are different people. In reality they have been changed by their relationship with our Lord! They allowed their lives with Jesus to change them. Little by little in their life with Jesus, the Word of God radiated more brightly in their lives and they brought more people to love and serve the Lord. We radiate what they radiated two thousand years ago. If we live the Word of God, we radiate by our lives Jesus and in doing so become fishers of women and men!
